Concerning my political affiliations, I belong to the Progressive wing (of the Republican Party), which I have belonged to since its beginning.  I have supported LaFollette's political ideas since 1897 and I worked as his guide in St Croix County during the last election.  I heard 12 different political speeches that he delivered in two days.  That was in 1904 when for the third time he was elected Governor (of Wisconsin). When I guided him, it was by automobile. .

Organized the Hadelandslaget in 1910 with 12 other Hadelanders at the Minnesota State Fair.  Was elected President in 1911 and have been reelected every year since.

On my way to the United States from Norway I lost my hat on the trip between Chicago and Hudson (WI) and came thus to Hudson with a bare head and only 25 cents in my pocket.  I had no friends or relatives (in America) except my brother who lived in Black Brook, Polk County.  I had little or no education in Norwegian and I didn't understand a single word in English.  I was an apprentice to a Blacksmith for 2 1/2 years and worked all that time without a salary.
