Tour to Trondheim, Bergen and the Fjords, June 24-July 2, 2015

Travel Itinerary

Wednesday, June 24 – HADELAND to TRONDHEIM.

We head north on Highway 4 through Hadeland via Gjøvik to LILLEHAMMER.  We’ll make a stop at the ’94 Olympic Ski Jump Arena before continuing our journey north on Highway E6 through the broad Gudbrandsdal Valley – via Tretten and Vinstra to Dombås where we will stop for lunch.  On our long afternoon drive we continue north through the Dovrefjell National Park to Oppdal and on to the “Cathedral City” of TRONDHEIM.  As we drive into historic Trondheim, we will acquaint you with the city.  Group dinner and over-night at the Prinsen Hotel.

Thursday, June 25 – TRONDHEIM.

We will take a short city tour before our visit to Trondheim’s most historic site – the Nidaros Cathedral, the largest cathedral in Scandinavia.  This famous church stood completed in 1310!  Located next to the cathedral is the Medieval Archbishop’s Residence, a most interesting museum.  We’ll visit that before taking our lunch break.  In the afternoon we’ll visit the harbor area and the old city of Trondheim.  For those who are interested, there will be a visit to Hell or on your own you can enjoy some free time exploring and/or shopping in this interesting city.  Our hotel is centrally located in the business district.

Friday, June 26 – TRONDHEIM to MOLDE.

We will travel west on Highway E-39 through the beautiful fjord countryside via Orkanger to the Halsa-Straumsnes ferry crossing.  At Kvernesfjord we will leave E-39 and continue on to Eide and then along the Kornstad Fjord to

the fantastic Atlantic Highway – one of the most spectacular drives in the entire world!  From there we will continue on into MOLDE and check into the Alexandra Hotel.  Molde is the “City of Roses” so you may wish to explore the town on your own.

Saturday, June 27 – MOLDE to LOEN.

Another day of driving through Norway’s scenic fjord country – the best in the entire world!  There are a couple of spectacular routes from Molde to Loen.  Our bus chauffeur will help the tour escorts decide which one to take!  Each route is equally super!  Mountains, fjords and world-famous scenery surround us on all sides.

Sunday, June 28 –  LOEN to BERGEN.

We'll drive south through more fjord country toward Bergen.  We rejoin Highway E-39 at Byrkjelo and continue on to Skei i Jølster where we will make a shopping stop at our favorite Norwegian-goods store – Audhild Vikens Vevestue.  We continue via Førde and Vadheim to Lavik where we take a ferry across the Sognefjord to Oppedal.  E-39 continues to take us into Bergen, Norway’s second largest city – founded by King Olav Kyrre in 1070.  Upon our arrival, a short guided tour will help acquaint you with this historic city.  Our hotel is located on Bergen’s famous “Walking Street” so there are a variety of restaurants, indoor and outdoor, in this area.

Monday, June 29 – BERGEN.

We’ll spend the morning on a walking tour of this beautiful city – “The Gateway to the Fjords” – visiting Bergen’s famous Fish Market before continuing on through the narrow streets of the historic Hanseatic Harbor area on our

way to visit St. Mary’s Church, built about 1150.  A ride to the top of Mount Fløien on the funicular is a must!  From there a splendid view of Bergen is spread out below us – a great photo stop!  In the afternoon we’ll take a trip out to Trollhaugen, Edvard Grieg’s summer home, located some seven kilometers from downtown.  We will return to the city center where you will have time for private sightseeing and shopping.

Tuesday, June 30 – BERGEN to STALHEIM.

Time to head back into the mountains again.  It is a beautiful drive to Dale and on to Voss.  There we will have lunch and then continue through the mountains, stopping at the well-known Tvindefossen – Tvinde Falls.  At Oppheim we’ll drive east to one of our favorite hotels in Norway – the famous Stalheim Hotel.  The hotel’s patio looks down into the depths of the Stalheim Gorge – a unique view of the valley below!  Before dinner we’ll visit the hotel’s interesting outdoor museum.

Wednesday, July 1 – STALHEIM to the GARDERMOEN AIRPORT (OSLO).

After our last bountiful Norwegian breakfast, our bus chauffeur will carefully drive down the dozen hair-pin turns into the Stalheim Valley as we begin our day-long drive across Norway.  After Gudvangen we’ll drive through three long tunnels – the longest one, the Lærdal Tunnel, is 15 miles long, the longest tunnel in the world!  There are several possible routes to travel.  We’ll let our chauffeur choose the itinerary that will take us to our final destination – the Park Inn Hotel at Oslo’s Gardermoen Airport.   Time to do your final packing for your flight home tomorrow.

Thursday, July 2 – OSLO to the U.S.A. or further private traveling in Norway.
