2011 Annual Meeting
Saturday, October 22, 2011
Bethania Lutheran Church (Vesterheim)
113 North Mill Street
Thanks to Barb Schmitt and
Dean Sorum for pictures
from the event!
This was the first year in which the annual meeting was scheduled as the Fall Meeting.
The morning began with coffee and cookies, followed by a brief business meeting. Dave Pfeffer and Barb Schmitt were re-elected as treasurer and board member, respectively.
Ron Norland was an excellent speaker, and sold many of his books following the presentation. This was followed by a catered lunch. The activities continued with a guided tour of the outdoor museum at the Vesterheim. Following the tour, some lag members ventured into the museum building itself and enjoyed the displays and collections found there.
Here are some ideas for sightseeing trips around the Decorah area:
Begin your day in Rushford MN (45 miles/60 minutes from Decorah)
Visit the Norsland Lefse Factory during the early morning hours.
The building has a small store and cafe, a good place for
breakfast or your morning coffee with pastry or fresh lefse!
Travel on to Lanesboro MN (20 miles/25 minutes from Rushford)
and visit the state fish hatchery. Feed the
fish from pails of fish food at different outside ponds and inside pens.
Walk or bike the Root River Trail. You can rent a bike at Little River General Store.
Enjoy a round of golf on the public course in Lanesboro or in Preston.
The Cottage House on Main Street in Lanesboro is a good place to spend the night.
Enjoy an evening performance of "Little Shop of Horrors"
or a week-end matinee of "To Kill a Mockingbird"
at the internationally famous Commonweal Theatre.
Visit the Scandinavian store in Harmony MN (14 miles/15 minutes from Lanesboro)
and take in Niagara Cave.
MISSISSIPPI VALLEY- Great River Road
Follow the back roads to LaCrescent MN (50 miles/1 hr 15 minutes from Decorah)
and cross the Mississippi to LaCrosse WI.
Take a riverboat cruise on the Mississippi.
Travel north along the Great River Road, stop at the Visitors' Center and enjoy the view from their decks.
Visit Lock & Dam #6. There's a great view of the lock traffic from the visitors' area.
Enjoy the drive through Winona, Lake City, and
Red Wing MN, home of both
Red Wing Shoe Factory (315 Main Street; tours 10 AM Monday-Friday)
and Red Wing Pottery.
OXBOW PARK and ZOLLMAN ZOO
Take a short drive to Oxbow Park, north of Byron MN (near Rochester MN, 80 miles from Decorah).
Its easy to spend 2-4 hours watching the bison,
